You know what Combat is for 2600 right? If not, it's probably befor your time, though I bet you'd like it's simple play mechanics even today.
This is Combat II on the 5200. It's hugely based off the great original Combat game on the 2600, with three major differences.
4 players. If you're fortunate enough to own one of the original four port 5200's, then you can play four players at a time. Either everybody against everybody, or on teams. Excellent.
A one player mode. Only one on one in tanks, but at last, this great game has a one player mode so you can play yourself and actually be upping your skill level.
Gaphics with obsticles that actually affect you. Sure, you can opt for a clear screen and play clasic style, or you can set up one of several screens for each mode of play. The obsticles actually affect your tanks driving also, watter and trees slow you down. And check out the night scene for an added challenge (especially since your completely concieled under the clouds in the center of the screen)
There are four vehicles to play as, Tanks, and Jets both make a return in the sequel. Helicopters and Subs are new.
The tanks play as the originals, with one difference, now you can back up. The jets also play as original. Subs and helicopters both play simularly, you controll the height they are from the bottome of the screen, and move left and right.
You have new weapons on this game. All your vehicles have the original primary fire weapon, and now have a secondary fire weapon. The tank has it's cannon, and a new machine gun. The Helicopter has it's machine gun, and a bomb. The Jet has a main gun and a machine bun. And the Submarine has it's torpiedo and a depth charge.
In addition to primary and secondary fire, you can also pres the number of the opponant you want to hit, and fire a heat seaking missile. How awesome is that?
There are two modes of play on this game. There's Combat mode, where you shoot each other and the first to get to 15 hits wins, only one hit kills on this mode.. And there's combat 2 mode. Last one with a life left wins, you have to kill everyone else four times each. And each vehicle can take several hits befor being blown up.
The graphics are fairly simple, for a 5200 game, but they blow away the 2600 version of the game.
So how's it rate?
Graphics 7 they aren't the best, but they're still pretty good, close to countermeasure's.
Sound 5 beyond the title screen, this game hasn't evolved any beyond the original combat.
Control 10 The controll is great, addition of backup on tanks is awesome.
Replay 10 with friends, there's always room for combat, but with a one player mode, this is great alone as well.
Over All 8 This is just a great game to have.
Final thoughts The graphics and sound could have been better, but this is one of those games that's great either way. The most unfortunate thing is availability. There are only 35 copies of this floating around, and all have been sold, but if one pops up on Ebay, I'd highly reccommend picking it up.
